1.       Principles

Lone workers are by definition not under constant supervision and this is the case when transporting parents, pupils or staff. However, there is the expectation that all school policies and procedures are followed during this time.

2.       Purpose

The purpose of this policy is to give guidance so that the School Attendance Officer is safe at all times.

3.       Roles & Responsibilities

a)      Parent support Officer to encourage the parent to accompany you with the child, back to school so that you are not alone with the child in the car. If this is not possible, the child must travel in the back seat and the parent needs to sign a consent form for the transport of their child back to school.

b)      Parent support Officer to leave the proposed route to be taken and addresses for visits prior to leaving school.

c)       Office staff to make regular calls to the Attendance Officer (at least 1 per half hour) to ensure Attendance Officer’s safety.

d)      Attendance Officer to stay on the door step of the house – do not go inside unless accompanied by another adult from school.

e)      Attendance Officer on returning to school immediately informs office staff of your return.

f)       Attendance Officer provides updated phone number should a change in phone have occurred.

g)      Attendance Officer & Head Teacher annually check risk assessment in place for transporting pupils in a member of staff vehicle.

If either the Tax, insurance or MOT is not in place – this service will not be provided and parents of pupils will have to make alternative arrangements.

  2. Make sure the child is securely fastened using the appropriate car seat and seat belt.
  3. Make sure child safety locks are used on the doors

If there is no adequate car seat – do not let child be transported in the car.

Do not let parent put child on their knee to transport child to school or home.

Make sure children exit the car on the pavement side & are accompanied either to the house door or the school entrance.

If the road way is too busy make the child stay in the car until it is suitable to exit.
